Processed meats - Is sausages and bacon bad for you ?

Those yummy smelling BBQ meats or sausage sizzle even though it smells good an tastes good  can be bad for your health according to research conducted by  the health industry. A 2005 University of Hawaii study found that processed meats increase the risk of pancreatic cancer by 67 percent

sausages and processed meats

The World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) who have done a research review on mor than 7,000 clinical studies has concluded that “Processed meats are too dangerous for human consumption.

Studies have also found that processed meats increase your risk of:

  • Colon cancer by 50 percent
  • Bladder cancer by 59 percent
  • Stomach cancer by 38 percent
  • Pancreatic cancer by 67 percent

The research say that Processed meats include bacon, sausage, hot dogs, sandwich meat, packaged ham, pepperoni, salami and virtually all red meat used in frozen prepared meals are not good for your health  and can contribute towards cancer. Consumers are offered no real protection from dangerous chemicals intentionally added to foods, medicines and personal care products.

However they have said that  regular meats eaten in moderation can be beneficial ,and in some instances  help provide the body with the vitamins needed. The research mainly  states that processed foods can be dangerous.

Why are processed meats dangerous ?

Processed meats are those preserved by smoking, curing or salting, or the addition of chemical preservatives. This includes bacon, ham, pastrami, salami, pepperoni, hot dogs, some sausages and hamburgers (if they have been preserved with salt or chemical additives) and more

A chemical carcinogenic ingredient known as sodium nitrite is used in processed meats  which can lead to cancer and other diseases and bad health. sodium nitrite also results in the formation of cancer-causing nitrosamines in the human body

Monosodium glutamate (MSG) is another dangerous additive that you need to keep an eye out for in meats or processed foods

Try to avoid processed meats such as bacon, ham, salami, corned beef and some sausages

Any meat that contains MSG, high-fructose corn syrup, preservatives, artificial flavor or artificial color is harmful to health

In the late 1970′s in the US an attempt to ban sodium nitrite was made but was overridden by the meat industry as the corporations that dominate American food and agricultural interests hold tremendous influence over the FDA and USDA

There is evidence that natural vitamin C found in citrus fruits and exotic berries (like camu camu) helps prevent the formation of cancer-causing nitrosamines, but you would rather avoid eating processed meats altogether

What meats are safe?

"uncured" varieties that contain NO nitrates

organic meats that are grass-fed or free-range

Products that are 100% beef, 100% chicken

Vitamins and the body Health

The human body is an incredibly complex organism that requires dozens of different vitamins, minerals, and nutrients so it can operate efficiently.

Nutritional requirements are often slightly different for young children, adolescents, and during pregnancy and breastfeeding.Ask your doctor or pharmacist if you are concerned about your vitamin intake.

Every bodily function, from digestion to growth, to muscle movement, to memories, requires the right vitamins to function properly. Different vitamins provide different benefits, but together a diet rich in appropriate vitamins and minerals keeps you strong, energetic, and healthy.

Vitamin Deficiencies

Vitamins

Not getting enough vitamins can create a wide range of health problems, including:

  • Lethargy and fatigue
  • Dry skin
  • Poor eyesight
  • Higher cholesterol levels
  • Raised blood pressure
  • Slow wound healing
  • Sore gums
  • Increased cancer and heart disease risks
  • Asthma
  • Diabetes
  • Infertility

The best sources of vitamins are fresh fruits and vegetables, lean meats, dairy, and other wholesome foods. Unfortunately, heavily processed foods such as those that come in boxes and bags on store shelves or in the freezer section often lack essential vitamins because the chemicals required to process and preserve the foods strips them of their healthiest nutrients. Because of this, many people may be vitamin deficient without realizing it.
